The Rule

The loop only breaks for the one who falls—there is no other door out.

The Rule

In the world of Summer Time Rendering, 'The Rule' is not a single superpower but the foundational constraint that governs the Rendering itself—the time-loop curse that haunts the island of Asoji. It defines who may trigger a reset, where time snaps back to, and what carries over between iterations. Every character who has ever experienced the loop has had to learn its boundaries the hard way.

The Rule is what separates the Rendering from a simple 'do-over.' It imposes a strict condition on the person who initiates the reset and fixes the anchor point to which the world returns. Because of this, the ability is both incredibly powerful and terrifyingly narrow: you cannot choose when, where, or how the loop breaks. You can only trigger it under the Rule's exact terms, and the cost is always the same.

Lore & Background

The Rule was written into the Rendering the moment the original curse was sealed on Asoji. It is not a spell someone cast with malice so much as a structural law of the phenomenon: the island's time does not simply 'rewind' at will. The reset is a one-way valve that opens only when a specific condition is met—a life is taken in a particular way, by a particular hand, under the particular circumstances the curse demands. Until that moment, the day simply plays out, no matter how many times it has been played before.

This is what makes the Rule so cruel for those trapped in the loop. A character may spend dozens of iterations trying to change an outcome, save an ally, or outmaneuver an enemy, and every single attempt still funnels back to the same fixed morning. The Rule does not negotiate. It does not offer a second trigger condition. The only lever anyone has is to engineer the precise death that the curse requires, and doing so means sacrificing the very person who would carry the memories forward.

Over the course of the story, the Rule becomes the central puzzle: who is the 'renderer,' who is the 'rendered,' and whether the condition can be satisfied without the renderer losing everything they have fought to protect. The answer to that question is, in many ways, the answer to the entire story.

In Their Own Story

The first time Ashiro felt the snap, he was mid-sentence. The afternoon sun on Asoji's shore was exactly where it had been, the cicadas were exactly where they had been, and Shima was walking toward him with that same half-smile, as if none of the blood, none of the screaming, none of the long, grey hours of the loop had ever happened. His own hands remembered. They always remembered. But the world did not. And somewhere in the back of his skull, the Rule hummed its single, indifferent condition: *not yet. You are not the one who must fall. Not this time. Not this way.* He swallowed the taste of salt and iron on his tongue and walked toward her, because the loop would not release him until he understood exactly what it wanted him to lose.

Reader's Guide

Activation condition: The Rule triggers a time reset only when a specific individual is killed under the precise circumstances the curse defines. This is not a choice the wielder makes freely; it is a condition that must be met. The person who 'dies' in the required manner becomes the catalyst, and the world snaps back to the fixed anchor point (the start of the loop's cycle).

Range and duration: The reset is global to the island of Asoji. All physical events, injuries, and deaths in the previous iteration are undone. The duration of the loop is one full cycle from the anchor point to the moment the condition is met. There is no 'partial' reset.

Memory retention: Those who were present in the loop retain their memories of the previous iteration. The world itself does not. This asymmetry is the core of the Rule's cruelty.

Known counters: The Rule cannot be overridden, negotiated, or bypassed by any other ability in the story. The only way to 'end' the loop is to satisfy the condition in a way that also resolves the underlying curse. Attempting to kill the wrong person, or killing the right person in the wrong way, simply does not trigger the reset.

Loop-reset behavior: When the reset occurs, all physical states revert. The renderer's memories persist. The rendered (the one who died) reverts to being alive at the anchor point, with no memory of the loop. The Rule itself is unchanged—it is the law, not a variable.

Wielder: The Rule is not wielded by a single character. It is the structure of the Rendering. Any character who fulfills the trigger condition activates it, whether they intend to or not.
